Lot and Cluster Traceability: What Importers Should Ask Their Indian Supplier
Traceability helps buyers connect a shipment to the records behind its sourcing, processing and packing. For agricultural commodities, the level of detail available depends on the supplier, product and supply chain. Importers should ask what can be documented for the actual lot rather than relying on broad marketing claims.
What traceability can cover
Depending on the operation, records may identify the sourcing region or cluster, supplier or mill, lot or batch, processing date, packing date and relevant quality checks. Not every supply chain uses the same record system, so define the information required for your business and destination.
What buyers should request
- A lot or batch identifier on the commercial and packing records.
- Product specification linked to the offered lot.
- Available origin or sourcing records.
- Quality inspection and laboratory reports, where agreed.
- Batch marking and a process for handling complaints or recalls.
- Records showing which documents correspond to the shipped goods.
Traceability is not the same as certification
A traceability statement does not itself prove a product meets every quality or regulatory requirement. Buyers should verify relevant registrations, certificates, tests and claims separately. If a specific certification is required, check its scope, validity and applicability to the product and facility.
Build traceability into the purchase order
State which lot records, batch markings, test reports and documents must be supplied. Agree how substitutions, split lots or changes in origin will be communicated. For repeat orders, keep the approved specification and retain shipment records so subsequent deliveries can be compared.
Ask D’Amalfi Global about sourcing records and quality documentation for your order. The available detail should be confirmed for the specific commodity and lot.
