How to Import Indian Spices: Quality Checks, Testing and Certificates

Indian spices are traded in whole, crushed and ground forms, each with different quality and handling considerations. Importers should establish the specification, testing plan and destination requirements before confirming an order.

Specify the spice

Identify the product, form and grade. For whole spices, buyers may assess size, colour, aroma, foreign matter and damaged material. For ground spices, particle size, colour, aroma and contamination controls may also matter.

Agree quality limits and testing

Specify moisture, purity, foreign matter and commodity-specific characteristics. Depending on the product and destination, buyers may require pesticide-residue, microbiological, mycotoxin or other testing. Agree limits and test methods with the importer or regulatory specialist. A general statement that testing is available is not the same as a certificate for the purchased lot.

Review samples and packaging

Approve a representative sample. Confirm whole or ground form, bag or pouch type, net weight, liners, batch identification and destination labelling. Packaging should suit the product’s sensitivity to moisture, light and aroma loss.

Check documents and quotations

Depending on the commodity and destination, documents may include a certificate of analysis, certificate of origin, phytosanitary documents where applicable, fumigation documents where required and transport paperwork. Verify current import rules for the exact product and market.

Compare quotations only when grade, quality limits, packing, quantity, shipment period, named ports and delivery terms match.
