How to Import Pulses and Dals from India: Packing, Specifications and Documents

Importing pulses and dals from India begins with a clear product specification and a shipment plan. Identify the exact commodity and form, agree measurable quality limits and confirm destination requirements before comparing quotations.

Choose the product and form

Common products include Toor Dal, Urad Dal, Moong Dal, Chana Dal, Kabuli chickpeas and Masoor. Specify whole, split, skinned or another required form. For chickpeas, state the calibre or size range. For Besan, agree on mesh or particle size and intended use.

Set quality limits

Depending on the product, specifications may cover moisture, purity, foreign matter, broken or damaged grains, colour, size and infestation limits. For food manufacturing, agree testing methods and acceptance limits in writing. Avoid using “premium quality” as the only criterion.

Confirm packing and samples

Confirm bag size, material, liners, sealing, printed marks, net weight and destination labelling. Request a representative sample and test it for the intended use. Agree how inspection will be carried out and how non-conformity will be documented.

Plan documents and shipping

Depending on commodity, destination and contract, documents may include commercial and transport paperwork, certificate of origin, certificate of analysis, phytosanitary documents where applicable and fumigation documents where required. Verify the exact requirements with the importer and customs broker.

Compare FOB and CIF offers on the same basis. Confirm quantity, packing, destination port, shipment window, payment terms and quotation validity.
