Spice Export HS Codes and Import Duty Basics for EU, US and Gulf Buyers
Importers often ask for an HS code before requesting a quotation. That is sensible because customs classification influences duties, controls and documentation. However, the international six-digit HS code does not always determine the final national tariff treatment.
Why HS codes matter
The Harmonized System provides an international framework for classifying traded goods. Rice generally falls under HS heading 1006, while many spices fall under Chapter 9. Examples include pepper under 0904, cardamom under 0908, cumin and certain similar seed spices under 0909, and turmeric under 0910.
European Union
EU importers should verify the applicable CN and TARIC classification using the current EU customs tariff. Buyers should check the product classification, country of origin, applicable third-country duty, preferences, quotas, restrictions and relevant agricultural or sanitary measures.
United States
US importers should verify the current US Harmonized Tariff Schedule. The US tariff schedule extends the international HS structure into more detailed national lines. Because tariff treatment can change, buyers should use the current classification.
Gulf markets
Gulf buyers should similarly verify the destination country's current tariff classification and import charges. The exporter should be given the destination country and port, product description, product form, intended use, packaging and any established HS classification.
HS code is not the same as landed cost
Customs duty is only one part of the buyer's landed cost. Other costs can include ocean freight, insurance, customs clearance, VAT or other taxes, port charges, inspection, handling, storage and local transportation.
The practical RFQ format
For a D'Amalfi quotation, buyers can provide product, specification, HS classification if already established, origin, packing, quantity, destination port, FOB or CIF basis and required documentation.
Conclusion
Good import planning connects product specification with customs classification and landed cost. D'Amalfi Global can prepare commercial quotations using the buyer's destination, quantity and shipping requirements.
