Pesticide MRL and Mycotoxin Testing for Spices: What Importers Should Check

Food importers may need to assess pesticide-residue limits and mycotoxin risks for particular spices and destination markets. Requirements depend on the commodity, country, intended use and current regulations, so buyers should confirm the applicable limits before placing an order.

Start with the destination market

Identify the importing country and the exact product. Do not assume that one test panel or limit applies to every spice or market. Confirm requirements with the importer’s compliance team, customs broker or qualified regulatory adviser.

Define the test plan

Specify which analytes or test panels are required, the applicable limits, the laboratory and the sampling method. If the buyer requires testing against a regulatory standard or customer protocol, state it clearly in the purchase order.

Review the report

  • Does the report identify the correct product and lot?
  • Are the sampling date and sample identification clear?
  • Are methods, units, results and reporting limits stated?
  • Does the report cover the buyer’s required analytes?
  • Was the report issued by a laboratory acceptable to the buyer?

Do not treat testing as a generic promise

A supplier’s ability to arrange testing does not establish that a particular lot passes. Confirm when samples will be collected, who pays for testing, whether shipment depends on results and how non-conforming results will be handled.

Before shipment

Agree the specification, test plan, documentation, packaging and inspection process. Keep the report linked to the shipment and verify any additional certification or import requirements for the destination.
