Turmeric Export Quality Standards: What International Buyers Should Check

Turmeric is purchased internationally by spice distributors, ingredient companies, food manufacturers and wholesalers. For an importer, buying turmeric from India requires more than comparing colour and price. The buyer should establish a clear product specification and connect testing and documentation to the destination market.

1. Define the exact turmeric product

Specify whether the requirement is whole turmeric fingers, turmeric powder, food-grade material, industrial ingredient grade, conventional product or certified organic product where applicable.

2. Define physical specifications

For whole turmeric, buyers may evaluate appearance, colour, size, moisture, foreign matter, damaged material and extraneous matter. For powder, additional parameters can include mesh size, colour, moisture, ash, microbiological requirements and adulteration controls.

3. MRL compliance

Maximum Residue Limits are important in food trade. A buyer supplying the EU, US or another regulated market should identify the applicable destination requirements before shipment.

4. Laboratory testing

Depending on destination and customer requirements, turmeric may be tested for pesticide residues, microbiology, heavy metals, aflatoxins where applicable, artificial colour or adulteration, moisture and curcumin content.

5. Traceability

Professional buyers should ask where the turmeric was sourced, which facility processed it, how it was cleaned, whether it was tested and what batch identification is available.

6. Packaging and labelling

The purchase order should specify bag material, net weight, number of bags, inner liner requirements, labelling, batch or lot identification and pallet requirements where applicable.

7. Compare the specification, not just price

Two offers described simply as Indian turmeric may differ in curcumin level, moisture, cleaning standard, testing, processing, packing and shipment terms.

8. Export documentation

Depending on the transaction, buyers may require a commercial invoice, packing list, Certificate of Origin, phytosanitary certificate where applicable, fumigation certificate where applicable, Bill of Lading, laboratory certificate and other destination-specific documents.

Conclusion

A reliable turmeric purchase starts with a destination-specific specification. D'Amalfi Global can structure bulk turmeric supply around the importer's specification and destination.
